Thurcorp on the Veteran Founder Podcast
Compliance for Existing Trucking Companies - Thurcorp
I recently had the opportunity to be a guest on the podcast Veteran Founder. If you’ve never heard of this podcast, it’s all about interviewing veterans who are busy starting their own businesses. I was honored to be interviewed on this show and wanted to share the episode with you all and a little summary of the things I spoke about.

My history with the military began at the age of 17. I enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1992. I was in field artillery for 9 years. At the end of those 9 years, I knew it was my time to leave the military.

During my time in the military I'd had the opportunity to get started in college. I'd gone into English, thinking to move on to law from there. However, once I finished my English degree, law just didn't feel like the right choice anymore. I decided to go back to school and get my accounting degree at that point.
It was while I was working as an accountant that I was introduced to the trucking world. A client came in saying he needed his operating authority. I had no idea what that was at the time but I figured I was a smart guy and could work it out. My experience helping that client changed my life.

In 2005 I left my accounting job to start up a trucking compliance business. It felt like everything I had done in my life thus far had helped prepare me for starting up Thurcorp. My passion in law has helped me understand DOT laws and regulations, plus understanding how to solve problems using the law effectively. My English degree has given me the communication skills I need to work with client, regulators and law enforcement in understanding the situation and explaining how to resolve whatever the circumstance dictates. My accounting degree and experience taught me attention to detail. I don't do much financial or tax accounting anymore but I sure learned how to make an accounting of the things that mattered.

Most of all, the military helped prepare me for starting my own business. It was in the military that I learned the true art of discipline. When you can withstand someone yelling in your face without getting upset or yelling back, you recognize that you are the master of yourself. The other important lesson I learned was that I can do hard things. Starting my own business took more mettle than I would have ever imagined and without my military background I might not have had the gumption for it.

“Hiring Thurcorp is a complete and utter, no-brainer. If I didn’t have Troy taking care of the things that he and his team do for me, I would spend less time focused on building revenue and finding the next job and the next opportunity. Working with Troy and his team is fantastic. They know you by name; they know your company; they know your situations. Every time I call, it’s like I’m calling a friend. The cost is small. The benefit is huge.”
